The "pin" on the input spreadsheet controls whether the spreadsheet dialog is displayed, or rolled up into the tab on the left. If you want the spreadsheet displayed, push the pin. This should hold between sessions.

To remove the blank legend pane, open one of the legends, then close the legend. This will also hold between sessions.
