Dear Friends,

Can we use API X52 material instead of specified requirement of ASTM A 333 Gr 6? (Design temp range -29C to 120C)

Regards
Rajeev

It depends what you use it for. Fishing weight in Alaska would be OK. For piping I would not use. X52 is intended for temperatures above room temperature. You can order it with charpy testing but only ar 32 F. Gr 6 is low temperature steel with guaranteed impact properties at -50 F. At -29C X52 can fail like Liberty ships in NY harbour.

This is great. Is there any other things to worry about like chemical composition of X52 which is having titanium and also manganese percentage more than A333 permits. For mechanical properties X52 has higher yield strength... If design temperature range is limited within 0C to 120C then X52 can replace A333. Right?

It depends on the pipe specification, if there is a good reason for not following the pipe specification you should get in touch with the client's engineers and seek their approval.

The A333 Gr6 is used for low temperature and gives a good result in chary test so if the dsign T° is limited within 0C to 120C you can use the X52 it gives also good results for your range T°

One is twice the other. 53 x 2 = 106. QED.

No, really you should read the ASTM spec book.

They are essentially similar carbon steel and are often interchangeable in pipe specifications, within specific temperature and size limits.

A106B is seamless, A53B may be welded or seamless. A53 may be black or galvanised. A106 is defined as for high temperature service in the ASTM handbook, and goes to 48", A53 stops at 26"

You could read the handbooks yourself.

It would be helpful to open the code and read the tittles of the specifications:

106: Specification for seamless carbon steel pipe for high-temperature service

53: Specification for pipe, steel, black and hot-dipped, zink coated, welded and seamless

106 is a reasonable pipe. 53 is less so. First you use for steam and similar and the other you leave to the plumbers.
