Is there a way to convert CW Steel components to CW Structural components? We use existing models for new projects and I would prefer to not have to remodel the steel if at all possible.

Thanks

Nothing direct that I know of. You might try a CIS/2 export/import, ala PCF export/import for piping. Given the differences between the two CADWorx formats and the neutral format, there will almost certainly be some rework.

There is no official command to convert legacy steel to structure. You could use the beam to line features to quickly trace if the CIS/2 option requires too much rework.

The legacy Steel appears to stil report to the BOM so you may not gain much by remodelling it if the existing models are nto going to change.

Digging up this old thread... For CADWorx 2019, is there still no officially supported way to convert/upgrade Legacy Steel to Structure objects? Thanks.

I believe I saw this in a webinar as a feature of 2020.

Good morning!

I would like to chime in on this topic and ask a few questions

Please tell the difference between CW Steel & CW Structure and then where does "Legacy Steel' come from? I have seen "Legacy in the vport properties window.

How do I show my graphics (direction of steel, web) in plan view?
I want my sections to look like a normal 2d drawing but derived from an xref 3d model. Is this possible without having to redraw the model in 2d?

Hi Kelly, CADWorx Steel is the precursor to CADWorx Structure from many moons ago. Those steel objects use a different data format entirely. For users that alot of older CADWorx Steel models, there is a method to convert them to behave like Structure objects so they can be manipulated.

Regarding your question on 2D, it looks like you are looking for the 2DREPSTR and 2DREPHSTR functionality.

STRLEGACYCONVERT was added to CADWorx Structure 2019. This command will convert CADWorx Steel components to CADWorx Structure components. As long as the Steel components aren't custom, there shouldn't be any issues converting them. I do believe there is some clean up with coping.

Hello Vanman
Hope you are doing well!

Is it possible to take a CADWorx Structural drawing into Advance Steel and have Advance Steel detail it?

Your help and advice on this matter will be greatly appreciated!!

Thank you

In theory you should be able to export a CIS/2 and then Advance Steel should be able to import it.

Am a little rusty on the AS side of things, but there will be a mapping procedure that translates unrecognized steel sections. Depending on how many sections are not recognized by AS, this may take some time.

Would recommend just sending them the frame of the structure. Have the detailer in AS add the relevant connections. AS wants welds and all sorts of other things along with Shop or Site bolts to determine the assemblies. Structure doesn't cater for any of this.

If you use construction lines/grid to build your Cadworx Structure you could use that to build your Advanced steel quickly and then add the welds/attachments.

If you find a method to "convert" please post.

Tried this out yesterday with a very basic Structural model. Couple Columns and some Beams. The Physical CIS/2 dit not work, but the Analysis option worked pretty well.

Plates did not transfer to AS, but the beams and columns did. Dimensionally accurate also.

Good morning Vanman

How do you do the "Analysis" option?

Choose the analysis options.

: STREXPORT
Please choose one option to export [Physical CIS2/Analysis CIS2/GT STRUDL/ CAESAR II] :
