Is there any thumb rule for allowable forces on the support (Sliding/Guide/Anchor) in respect of pipe size?
Please suggest me some good literature/references for 'Special Support design'. It will be helpful if it includes some sample calculations (manually done).

Thanks and regards,

Dny

The allowable loads, with attendant dimensions and welding definitions, for Shoes, Guides, Line Stops, etc. fall into the realm of so-called Pipe Support Standards. All engineering firms who are engaged in piping design activities carry such a document. My prior working with E&C companies involved the Pipe Support Standards, and they are involved. My advice here for you is search for some Standards developed by others before embarking on designing your own. This isn't a rule of thumb matter.

Hi Darren,
Thanks for your reply. Indeed I use the company support standards. When compared with different company std. I can see there is difference between allowable loads. I could not find the source calculations for the geometry of the support. Though calculations comes under structural engineers scope, I am curious about the parameters to be used designing support.
For standard supports sure we can use company standards, but for special supports I think it is better to be well inform about its design calculations. This is the reason I wanted some references/iterature/guidelines for Special support designing.
I would be thankful if you (Or anyone from this forum) can help me to search for it.
Thanks for your patience,

For one you may wish to buy the book of "Design of Piping Systems" by M.W. Kellogg. This book contains a treasure trough and is a classic to keep. In it you will find an obscure formula on calculating localized stress, which, with due diligence, is applicable for analyzing piping attachments. As a cliche you can always construct some FEA models to serve. Good luck and so long.

If you ever find a copy of the Kellogg book, please get two copies and I'll pay you back. I'd like to get my hands on one of those. They are collector's items.

I recently contacted the publisher about reprinting this book. Apparently, the last run was in 1991. They actually responded pretty quickly to my email, but reported that there were currently no plans for an additional printing at this time.

I'll track down that contact information and post it. Perhaps we can show some grass roots interest to the publisher that there are a number of people who want copies of this book.

Sorry it took me so long...here's that email about Design of Piping Systems. Perhaps more contacts to the publisher will convince them that there is demand for anew printing of this book:

Thank you for your interest in our product, ISBN 0-471-46795-2 Design of
Piping Systems, Revised 2nd Edition (Cloth), by Kellogg Company. It has
been out of print since May 1991. There are no newer editions planned. We
will gladly share your feedback with the Editor.

COMMENT: Request a new Printing of the following book that remains the
standard reference for piping engineers around the world:

Design of Piping Systems
by Kellogg

Publisher: John Wiley & Sons; ASIN: 0471467952; 2nd edition (June 1964)

This book has been out of print, unfortunately, for a number of years and
used copies are very difficult to find. There is a substatial market
interest in this book and I would encourage your company to consider a new
printing of this reference book.

Did you try MSS SP-58 Tables 2 and A1 for the allowable tensile stress for materials commonly used in the design of piping support?

Regards,

Hi Edward,
Thanks for efforts made for Kellog's handbook.
It would be useful to know minimum how much copies publication can print. And what would be the cost per copy. I expect there will be many number of buyers for this book.
Once we come to know the cost, people who are willing can book their copies. Hope this number satisfies minimum copies required by publication.
Since you are already in touch there, please do this additional favour to write them one more email.
