Hi all,

I am getting a memory error when my designer tried to export a (not very large) cadworx piping model to CAESAR II. The export function stops running at 2705 elements and says there is not enough memory to complete the export. We tried increasing the memory but that did not work. When the model was exported as 4 separate models, it worked and they can be referenced in, but when I renumber all the nodes for the reference models the supports that were referenced in do not renumber with the nodes they were attached to so really two separate issues. If anyone has a strategy for exporting large piping models with lots of pipe supports (specifically lots of Tulsa clamp supports) from CadWorx that works well I would greatly appreciate it! I am trying to avoid having to split every element into multiple elements to accurately model the pipe clamps in CAESAR II and accomplish this in Cadworx. Thanks!

Hi Tyler88

Have the draftsman create another simpler Cadworx model with just a simple vertical support and a guide all round to represent the clamps. Trying to export a modeled clamp in Cadworx to Caesar II without being properly connected to the pipe segment will not work. Make sure all nodes and segments are absolutely connected in Cadworx as well for node numbers not to jump out of sequence.

Let me know if this helps.

Thank you
Best Regards
Ryan Martin

Last time I dealt with a Cadworx import the node numbering was a pain because it seems to be based upon the sequence the designer drew the pipe. So if they had to go back and change things, the node numbering will be out of order/nonsensical.

If you're bringing in a lot of equipment/support structures try not including those and just re-defining them in Caesar if the export works.

Thanks Ryan and anubis512. Our designers are relatively new at this so I appreciate the help. He was manually adding "restraints" in Cadworx that mirrored what was modeled structurally to create a simple support. What we found is that the +Y and guide supports work but the -Y did not. When he modeled in a restraint in the negative vertical direction it came in as another +Y.
I'm also wondering if anyone has done a sensitivity analysis on modeling clamps as a single Y with a guide vs. splitting the element up and adding a restraint on either end of the clamp in order to restrain rotation. Maybe its not worth the effort to put in several restraints vs. one. For some context we are modeling a ~250' diameter API 650 tank with up to 30" fill and suction lines so modeling stress accurately is critical. Thanks again for your help.
