How is a sump designed using PVElite?
Shall we define it as a nozzle and then design it?
Whether the UG-45 of ASME SEC-V111 DIv -1 is applicable for sump shells?
Hope someone has an answer.

Hi Ranjit,

To design a sump, model it as a nozzle without any flange.

The UG-45 checks the minimum nozzle neck thickness to withstand the stresses due to loads from the attached piping. If you think there are no appreciable piping loads acting on the sump then there is a box you can check to skip UG-45. This box is located in the nozzle dialog, “Manway/Acs Ope?”

In my opinion a sump can be exempted from UG-45 requirement, as there are no piping loads acting on it. But, you are the one to make this decision.

You can also add a head to this sump: - Go to the last element in your vessel and then add a head. For your identification purpose, give it a description say "sump head". Then in the element Additional Data Screen (bottom left) for this head, indicate that this is a sump head and select the nozzle to which it connects.

In PVElite example directory there are some examples of the vessels with sumps, horiz1.pvi and sumpmodel.pvi. You can refer to them.

Reference to the case, what if I want to add a smaller nozzle to the sump nozzle pipe.

In my case, I need to have a nozzle connection for lower point of level guage on the body of sump itself. Please note that I need this nozzle on shell of sump and not on the sump head.

Any help will be appreciated.

Hello Syed

It appears to me that you would like to install a daughter nozzle in a parent nozzle. You will find a field called: "Is this nozzle connected to another nozzle?". You will find it just under the thumbnail sketches of the various nozzle configurations on the nozzle dialogue screen.

If you have any difficulty in identifying this field, or how to enter a nozzle on a nozzle, write to me (Ray) at techsupport@coade.com

Dear Sir,

In the above case, i want to add a body flange to sump/boot nozzle.

The sump/boot has connected in a horizontal vessel and other end has a dish end.Now our client required a body flange in that sump/boot nozzle.

Is it possible in PV Elite..??
