Hello rhv

I assume you mean a vessel with a plain jacket (not a half pipe jacted). PVElite does not have a provision for performing this calculation. I'm afraid you will have to do at least part of the calculation by hand. When checking the inner shell, find the worst external pressure. For example, suppose the vessel has an internal pressure of 100 psi, and a jacket pressure of 80 psi, you must consider that the jacket pressure is applied when the inside jacket pressure is zero. Therefore, you would set the external pressure to 80 psi, and PVElite or CodeCalc will determine the thickness for the inner shell. As for the jacket, treat this as a shell subject to the jacket pressure. In this way you can determind the required thickness of both the inner shell, and outer jacket.

The other issue is the matter of attaching the jacket to the main shell. This is the part that you have to calculate by hand. This is dealt with in ASME Section VIII, Division1, Appendix 9. This calculation is very important, because if the jacket parts company with the inner shell, the result is disastrous.
