I vaguely recall one of the class presenters some years back presenting a case where rain had caused an entire section of a facility to turn into a mess of "spaghetti" pipe due to rain cooling the top half to a lower temperature than the bottom half. The solution for which was to isolate the pipe from the rain.

I'm wondering if anyone has heard of any guidance on predicting this to be a problem as I want to verify my situation of piping near water-evaporative coolers that may have water spray out and hit the piping.

Thanks.

At first view, you may use pipe shield insulation. A simple metal sheet at some distance from pipe.
For the other situation with rain, maybe delta bowing to be of some help.
However rain is not falling always perfectly vertical.

I won't know until later whether or not the chilled over-spray will be a worse case than the rain. If it isn't, then I suspect that it'll be ignored as we don't typically consider rain.

However, additional cost of installation of something the end-user has never seen before must be justified.

Thanks.

How about the size of pipe?

Few project, drain or sampling line(below 2'') for high temperature steam line(above 560 celsius degree) placed at pipe rack do not have insulation and at least I have not seen any line subjected thermal bowing at site when it's rain.

It was steel pipe or PCV ???
In the second case it is okey because some time a go we do the peak roof like /\ but it was do to protect the black pvc pipe before a sun.
I never heard about situation that steel pipe change the shape after the rain.
In standard if the pipe is hot we should use any insulation with steel coat to reduce a heat loss.

Much of the details of the work is still speculative on my part at present time. What I do know is that it's process piping, likely a range of sizes, from drain lines on up.

Material is carbon steel as I understand it.

The current recommendation is for TSA coating (thermally sprayed aluminum) due to the wetness.

I wanted to give management just enough heads up early, but I don't think we'll be able to give them particular guidance without more info from them.

Thanks.
