Dear Sir,

The choice of taking the cone as a line of support is based on the discretion of the designer. Please refer to figure UG-28.1 in ASME Section VIII Division for more information. Be sure to follow the Notes (1),(2) and (3) that are given in the figure. It may turn out that rings may not be required at all if the junction is not a line of support. It is well worth the effort to analyze the junctions both ways.

ASME Section VIII, Division 1 currently allows either or both cone junctures to be lines of support, or not, at the designer's discretion. Many times a vacuum stiffener can be eliminated, especially at the small end of cones, by checking the juncture as not a line of support.

PVElite currently only allows for both ends to be lines of support, or not. It is my understanding that they are working on a fix for this oversight. CodeCalc can be used and seems to work correctly.
