We are facing a strange problem of todays' generation of work share environment - piping stress has become a cheap commodity type job!

People are diluting piping stress walk down audits as 100% coverage of all constructed piping loops inspection with piping stress analysts wearing full body harness!

Overworked auditors look at volume coverage and overlook Pareto principle of 80/20. Unless auditors have right to choose their sample size, can they be called independent!

Sometimes we look at this foolish non-elitist approach of using piping stress analysts as site inspectors and wait for possible failures getting overlooked till some mishap happens which could have been prevented!

What our friends, here, say on such an issue ?

Maybe we are used to confuse between inspection and audit in piping stress walk down before and after commissioning!

An inspection of piping and support erection is a bunch of closed questions in a check list with answer- Y/N/NA like our gender which verifies the mechanical completion of piping erection.

An audit is made of observations bringing out non-conformity (major or minor - generic or specific) with the applicable codes and procedures.

Inspections are a “do” and audits are a “check”. Buses can have conductors and bus service can have ticket checkers.


Using ticket checkers to work as bus conductors may not be a wise solution even in a very rich city bus service! It may be costly and at the same time ineffective. Piping stress & support designers are not right people for piping and support erection inspection. They should be used in compliance audit where quality is needed instead of quantity covered.

Still no comments; read the posts at least & don't repeat our mistakes!

Eleanor Roosevelt, the former first lady of US once wrote: "It is necessary for us to learn from other's mistakes. You will not live long enough to make all yourself".

Engineers need to be surrounded by people whose abilities they trust.

But, trust nobody, except yourself - be a loner.

Never put direct reports to multi tasking & over work. Their 15 minute moderate walk, five minute breaks between two tasks and specific -explicit & clear feedback to them will make them credible people to work with. Give them space to think on a problem at hand distance themselves from the immediate situation before taking a decision.

Unless we prioritize and break down inspectors and auditors works, we may be great in politics, but failure in real life!

Nobody joined this issue so far in one year!

In a country if few people get killed by a mad man, nobody blames and should not blame the security aparatus, but must look at the source of the problem .. who allowed him to buy so many guns .. we ?

Similarly, when process licensors, concept ual engineer, DEC, eqpt vendors, construction, operations people make mistakes, they crucify the certifying auditor as if we are paid for this return!

We are professionals to find flaws in established SOPs to make them robust enough to be foolproof, but, we can not ensure absolute safety as neither 100% we can audit, nor it is useful to spread the same so thin to make it useless!

In the end, let us pray for the departed and wish for an effective gun control law to make the future safer for all!
