I am fairly new to pipe stressing and seeking some clarification as to the correct application of specifying the SIF on a bend with a trunnion.

If I have a bend at node 20 with a trunnion attached, do I specify the SIF(bend) value calculated from the scratch pad as the inplane/outplane SIF at node 20. In turn if the trunnion is connected to node 19 on the bend, do I specify the SIF (trunnion, max)value at node 19 in the trunnion element definition.

This is how I interpret the note at the bottom of the scratch pad. I ask this question as the SIF (bend) value calculated of 8.93 seems very large, nearly 4 times the SIF without a trunnion and my analysis of an existing piping system is showing an overstress at this point.

The piping codes don't address "bends with trunnions". You have two options:

a) use the SIF from the scratchpad, or
b) use FEA software (such as FE/PIPE) to deterimine your own SIF.

If you search this forum you will find other threads on this subject.

and you are not engaged in pipestressing (perhaps you are who knows) The original paper by Markl et. al. was entitled piping flexibilty analysis... I am a piping flexibilty analyst.
