Hello,

I am using API 5L Grade B pipe in my analysis. The error checker gives me a warning which reads:

"Warning - Message Number 252E - On element 10 TO 20 yield stress is not specified. It is set to 0.0"

The analysis results however seem to be ok. Why is this material showing this warning? How does a 0.0 yield stress affect the results?

Since the analysis is computed using the B31.3 code equations, isn't the yield stress not necessary if all of the other pipe properties are available (which they are for this material)?

Thank you,
Dmitriy

I looked into the CAESAR II Help under Sy and found this is only used for Hydrotest Allowable.

Is a hydrotest analysis for this pipe material not possible in CAESAR II? Does this have to be manually input? Why is this value not available?

Thank you,
Dmitriy

When the material database was created CAESAR II didn't perform a hydrotest, so Sy wasn't necessary. Since then we've added Sy to some of the materials, but not all.

If you use a material where the Sy isn't in the database, you can either:
- add Sy to the input or
- add Sy to the material database so you can reference it in the future.

A follow-up question: Table K1 in B31.3 code only shows a Specified Yield Strength of 35 ksi for API-5L Grade B. I am assuming this is for ambient temperature.

I do not think it is safe nor accurate to copy the yield stress values from A106 Grade B material. Am I wrong?

If so, is this information available somewhere?

Thank you,
Dmitriy
