You could try reading the User Guide, provided with your copy of Caesar II.

You would specify 'double flange' if there is a flange (or similar rigid body)on both ends of the elbow, and 'single flange' if there is a flange on one end ofthe elbow.

You could check the effects this setting has on a simple geometry to properly understand what it does.

Also check the Piping Code (Appendix D in B31.1 or B31.3) to see the effect of single/double flanges on the SIF values.

Mr.Richard,

May I ask more question?

CAESAR II will determine 'c factor'(acc to B31.1) and multifly it with bend SIF. For sure, I do some test, modifying type and see the SIF changed.
When I look up the User guide, it says if there is any rigid or heavy body within bend diameter, we should consider bend is flanged.

Here is my question, what kind of rigid body are we consider? Does it include trunnion, dummy, pressure balanced expansion joint? Or if I modeled those things in CAESAR II, it'll affect the values, such as SIF without setting type?

-------------------------------------------------------
Having been searched past posts, I found these(http://65.57.255.42/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=13016&page=1&fpart=1 and http://65.57.255.42/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Main=1502&Number=6569#Post6569) and this could be answer for my question. I might delete my reply but I'll leave it in case other having same question may find references.

No, those nearby items (valves, expansion joints, etc) will not automatically affect the bend SIFs - you still need to specify single or double flanged.

Trunnions and dummies are completely different. Yes they do affect the SIF and flexibility, but not in the same was as that "c factor". I cannot offer guidance on these items - every company has their own philosophy.
