When modeling dual certified 304/304L, can you use either the 304 or the 304L allowables for up to 1000°F? I read an interpretation (1990) that indicates the below 1000°F you can use both, but above you must use the 304L allowables. Is this stil true? Any other information I should know when modeling this material?

I believe iI have read about this in a previous post, however, when i do a search, it finds so mnay hits, it is easier to ask and not spend all of my clients tims here!

Thanks!

Grade 304L is resistant to carbide precipitation (because for this austenitic SS "low carbon” means less Cr23C6 precipitation) and consequently that means less corrosion in Cr-depleted grain boundary zone.

Type 304L has slightly lower mechanical properties than Type 304.

Some products may be available as "dual certified" material that meets the criteria for both 304 and 304L, at the same time.
Strength Calculation can be made using the stronger 304 table values, up to 1000-deg F, and corrosion estimation can be based on the 304L material properties.

Best regards.
