Hi,

About loads on equipment, should we use the design conditions or the operating conditions of the pipe to verify loads on equipment.
I'm disagree with my boss about that.

Best regards

As some specs mention, operating conditions can be used for analyzing.

Thank you, that's what I tought. But is it explicitly written on codes like ASME B31.3 or Codeti.
Do we have to refer to piping codes or equipment code.

Design companies and operators have different ways of defining 'design' conditions. For example many simply use the max operating. Others add a constant 30 deg C to the max op .... fine if it's 300 deg operating, but a pain if its 25 deg C

It should be defined in Process Basis of Design documents. Otherwise, good practice to clarify what you are supposed to use. I have often used max op where an unrealistic design temp has been applied, and had the Process Line List annotated to suit.

Hello Everybody,

I am analyzing an 18" CS pump discharge line operating at 20 deg C. The pump nozzle loads are within the allowable range in the operating load case but they are 2-3 time the allowables when considering 70 deg C for solar radiation.
Would it be ok to have loads larger than allowable on pump nozzles when they are not in operation ?

Regards,

Some companies spec allows 1.5 times the allowable loads for stand-by cases. But check your design spec. If you ask me, then I/m o.k with these high loads for non-operating condition. Sometimes, the pump itself is not there to see these loads (lying in the maintenance shop).
