Hello friends,

I am reviewing the extraction system, pipe size is 30inch. I found that system experience very high nozzle forces & moments also exceeding the expansion stresses.
First time i am going to use Expansion joint (EJ).
I have tried with Metallic Tied EJ but the system fails in expansion stresses. Then i have used Universal Tied EJ it qualifies in expansion stresses. Please note that the boundary condition i used as describe in C2AG.

Refer attached file & please advise me as per below points:-

1. Metallic Tied used for absorbing axial & small amount of Lateral & angular movement. But my system fail is expansion stress with Metallic Tied EJ. But with Universal TIED EJ system qualified in expansion stresses. Universal tied EJ used for large lateral movement as well as axial & angular movement. But my system experiences low lateral movement even less than 10 mm. Why the system fails with Metallic Tied expansion joint?

2. Restraint used in the analysis for the EJ. Axial restraint experience 7 ton load. Is it ok? The same load be given to vendor for the Tie rod design. What about rotational restraint.

3. EJ model in caesarII is correct as per the requirement Or some changes required.

I have already searched in discussion forum. But not found much detail.

Regards,
Daman

Also how to take care of compression & lateral movement given by vendor.

I think it's time to talk to your supervisor.

Singh – I took a look at your model and the bellows/pipe/bellows configuration looks OK but the restraints are overly complex and probably need to be revised. Please remember that a tied universal joint will only absorb lateral movement and the growth inside the restraint, ie no external axial movement/rotation. An unrestrained universal will absorb movements and rotations in all six degrees of freedom but also will expose your system to pressure thrust. More information is available in the CAESAR II user’s manual. Also, you may might want to download our metal EJ catalog which has a discussion of types of joints and there capabilities at myej.com.

Since a universal joint with tied rods will only absorb lateral movement and the growth inside the restraint, your method of employing EJs does not comply with the rules provided by EJMA . Are nodes 350&390 representing nozzles ?If yes ,7tons shoud be too large to pass criteria.
