Does anybody know how to do square tank design?
I am using Roark and Young for thickness calculations,
but how should I determine the size of Stiffners to be used?

you can use the following formula for determining stiffening frame size ;

Z = (0,062 x 0,036 x G x H3 x l) / S

G : specific gravity of liquid
H : height of tanks, inches
l : difference between stiffenings, inches
S : stress value of plate, psi
Z : section modulus, in3

You should review ASME Section VIII on "rectangular vessel" design. API-650 is for cylindrical bottom founded tanks only.

yes Richard, you are right. This design is applicable for ASME.

I'm not sure, I haven't studied API-620.

Hello Folks

There is a procedure in ASME Section VIII, Division 1 for rectangular tank design. It is available in our PV Elite software as we address ASME in general for pressure vessel analysis. That software is available should you require it.

Good Afternoon everyone,

I am currently designing an underground tank to be used as sump tank to receive slugs and condensates from a Pig Line.

Kindly confirm if Pressure Vessel Handbook by Eugene Megysey is adequate for such design. Wouldn't the procedure in ASME Section VIII Division 1 for rectangular tank be an over-design since it is under pressure? In my case I am designing to atmospheric pressure.

Also i need someone who has designed for underground tanks using the standard UL 53!

Thank you

Dear All,

how to calculate local stress due to nozzle load for rectangular tank.

All know, WRC 107 & 297 only cover for cylindrical & ellipsoidal shape.

Pls help to advise.

regard,

ZUL

Hi Richard / Ray ,

In PV Elite ASME Section VIII Div.1 Appendix 13, could be used for double wall rectangular tanks ?

Also provision for additon of Tie-Rod for controling defelction is available in PV Elite ?

Hello amit-frames

The original issue was the design of rectangular vessels, and later stiffeners came into the mix. The answer to that question is still ASME VIII, Division 1 Appendix 13. CodeCalc has the functionality to do that analysis complete with stiffeners. So, that part of the question is really 'put to bed' now.

Next the issue of underground tanks was raised. The problem there is the fact that the pressure profile exerted by the soil is not just one pressure. Appendix 13 can only handle one pressure (external or internal), so the method in CodeCalc has to be used with extreme caution.

The issue of double wall rectangular tanks was raised. The method in ASME Appendix 13 does not address that, following which CodeCalc cannot do it either.

The issue of external loads on Nozzles was discussed. There are two methods available in PV Elite or CodeCalc. That is WRC 107, or the use of the Paulin Research group software NozzlePRO which is available from Intergraph, and it works with PV Elite or as a stand-alone programme.

One final word on the use of the Forum. It is better to concentrate on one issue rather that adding other issues that are not directly related. This is not a strict rule, but it is much easier to concentrated on one subject at a time.
