Hi guys,

While designing horizontal vessel as per ASME Sec VIII div 1, PV elite use Div 2 method to analyze. But in Div.1 UG 23 (d)there is the provision of allowable stress can be increase upto factor 1.2 times the allowable stress permitted by code for combine effect of wind or earthquake loading with other loads.
Is there any option to increase such factor in PV-Elite?

Regards
Susan

I think We can use same option as we are using for tall columns.which is given in general option.

But programme doesn't increase the allowable stress in saddle analysis likewise in the hydrotest condition 90% yield.

At the moment we need to manually check induced stress & compare it with higher allowable.

Good observation susan

Thanks for the reply M.Patel.

As we are the end user of the software (PV-Elite) and wants to use directly report generated by software to send to client without manual modification so that work will be efficient. So, in my opinion PV-Elite shall put this option(like 1.2 times increase in allowable stress for wind/seismic+operating and as M.Patel has mention above) so that there will be need of manual modification of report generated by the software.

Does any body know if there is a code restriction to use saddle design method per Div. 2 in a Div. 1 Pressure vessel?
I have a comment from our ASME Inspector

Thank you,
Fernando

Hi Fernando,

There is no restriction on using the Section VIII Division II saddle calculation on a Division 1 vessel. Additionally, you could tell your inspector about Code Case 2695, which allows the use of Division 2 methodology for all calculations using Division 1 allowable stresses.

This is an option in PV Elite and can be found in Tools->Configuration.
