Hi,

I have CSA G40.21 grade 44w steel piping but this material is not in Caesar II's database. If I want to add the material, I should at least enter the elastic modulus, expansion coefficient and yield stress at various temperatures. These properties are not listed in CSA G40.20/21 and this standard's manager (after talking to a committee member) tells me maybe he could obtain these properties from a researcher at C FER in Edmonton.

I was wondering if anyone knew the equivalent ASTM or EN grade steel listed in Caesar's database or could have these properties. I can't find any conversion chart for steel grades between CSA and others. Manufacturers don't even seem to know.

P.S. : Also, G40.21 state a density of 0.2836 lb/in3. It doesn't apply to any particular grade. Is it the same for all grades?

Thank you in advance.

After contacting about 40 manufacturers, I was informed that similar steels would be A36 (which isn't listed in Caesar) and API-5L X42 (which is).

A36 is structural steel and is not used for pipes, this is why is not in Caesar database.

(Digging up my old thread)

Hi,

Has anyone here had to deal with CSA G40.21 44W steel ? If so, what material do you use instead ? I'm having my doubts about API-5L X42 as a proper similar steel.

Did you make a user defined material ? If so, could you upload an excel file (or comething else) listing the properties ?

CSA G40.21 doesn't list any temperature dependant properties. This is what sets me back from using an incomplete user created material.

What I can find about this material is that it is a specification for structural steel plate. Is it even allowed by your piping code / client / notified body to use this material for piping?
Yield and tensile strength at ambient temperature are more or less the same as P295 steel. Which is recognized as piping material in EN-10028-2 for example.

Corne,

Yes this is a plate specification and some canadian pipe mills use these sheets to form pipes. This is a client request.

44W has 44 ksi of yield strength but I can't find any data on the modulus of elasticity, yield strength and expansion coefficient at different temperatures, poisson's ratio and cold modulus of elasticity.

My manager suggests A106 A.
