Load Cases with thermal displacements (D1, D2) and restraint settlement (D3):

L1 W+T1+D1+D3+P1 (OPE)
L2 W+T2+D2+D3+P1 (OPE)
L3 W+P1 (SUS)
L4 L1-L3 (EXP) * effects of T1, D1, and settlement
L5 L2-L3 (EXP) * effects of T2, D2, and settlement
L6 L1-L2 (EXP) * full expansion stress range with settlement


Need opinions on case L6 statement which claim to be full stress range with Settlement. I am in opinion that settlement
is cancelled out when taking difference of case L1 and L2.
Please comments.

Hi,

Settlement will not be cancelled in case six above.It is not mathematically subtracting the basic load components from (L1) to (L2).
It is expansion stress range from (L1) to (L2)when system is undergoing from temperature T1 to T2 with displacements and settlement.

To understand further , if we consider quantity of D1 is equal to D2 ,system displacements would have also cancelled.but actually it is not.
