I have a 10 inch line with local corrosion. I mean it has some external corroded spots in a limited area (around 100 mm).Wall thickness calculation base on the minimum measured thickness of the corroded area (from RT report) shows this line is fit for service. Client asked us to do stress analysis with CAESAR for this line. It means I have to consider a 100mm piece of pipe with minimum measured thickness and run Caesar ii. challenge is I'm not sure if this analysis is a right solution as I think a finite element software like Ansys is the solution. On the other hand ASME B31.3 doesn't have any recommendation for the SIF of corrosion. Do you CAESAR to would be helpful while I don't have any access to other finite element soft-wares?

Hi Edwin..

What we used to do for such cases is to consider the min thk obtained from the report & ask our materials group to carry out thickness calculation.

We also reduce the thickness of that spool & rerun the analysis for any significant load or stress changes!!

If the components on this 100 mm spool are addressed by the applied code, you needn't worry for the SIFs. This doesn't entail usage of FEA.

Just treat this pipe same as a new pipe of same size but with different thickness. Rest all will be taken care of automatically (like if you've any attachments on this 100 mm spool, new SIFs will be calculated & stresses checked accordingly by CAESAR).!!!
