Hello all,

Sometimes we have to specify if a certain material is a low carbon steel or Austenitic, or low alloy, etc. And I guess that there should be a direct relationship with the material spec (Such as A387 Gr B or SA-106 GR B). Does any one know where or how can I know, from the spec, what kind of material is. ? IS there a document that clasifies the specs according to low, high alloy, etc?
Some of them I know it by heart, but I would like to be able to refer to a document at any time from now on.

Thanks

look at your code book it groups materials in the stress tables and you can look up the materials by their ASTM designation....

To bring more clarity----------
if you look in B31.3 appendix A the materials as grouped as CS, Low and intermediate alloy steel, stainless steel etc. The exact definition or properties can be referred in ASTM 01.01 for ferrous materials.
Hope this helps
