Hello

There is a good article on the Changes in process piping code 31.3/2004 in Hydrocarbon processing-Sept/05 edition, authored by Sam Kannappan.

There are some significant changes in the Allowable Stresses.

The Stress range REDUCTION factor is now called Stress Range factor. The factor now can reach a value of more than 1.

The article is a collection of the changes.

Thanks Neelam,

Mr. Sockalingam 'Sam' Kannappan, is a well known and very knowledgeable piping engineer who has authored at least two books (Introduction to Pipe Stress Analysis " (2 volumes) by Sam Kannappan, 1992, (ISBN 0 89464 706 7), Krieger Publishing Company, Malabar, Florida, 32950). and many useful articles on the subject. You may be able to find Sam's books in the "out of print" or used book markets (e.g., http://www.bookhq.com/compare/0894647067.html). These are books very much worth buying, reading and having for reference on your book shelf - albeit as Neelam points out (and I am sure that Sam does as well) there have been significant changes in the rules since 1992. I will have to have a look at HC and read Sam's article (I haven't had time yet  ).

Another brief update on the new B31.3 rules can be found on Dr. Chuck Becht's web site at:

The article in Hydrocarbon Processing is for the most part a copy of the text of the article on the Becht website that John Breen refers to, so you can get the same info there.

Becht Sir,

Mr. Sockalingam 'Sam' Kannappan has expressed his gratitude & cited your article in his article.

Most of us have read the article on your website much before reading the original 2004 ed of B 31.3.

You All are Great due to Talent, Geneius or Education. But, we, the relatively young & small ones, want to learn from You - Goodness.

You are so charismatic that you needn't any justification from yourself !

Happy Deepavali to All. Let Holy Mother lead us from darkness to Light.

regards,

sam

(the poor fake who dropped the last two letters of his first name for protection without realising that he has taken the nickname of the famous Mr. Sockalingam 'Sam' Kannappan)

The Becht website contents on the 31.3 changes are also very informative. The article in Hydrocarbon cites literature from Becht Website.

Thanks to Sir John and Chuck for this information.
