Dear Moderators,
Could you please advice what is the formula used by PVelite to determine bending and shear stress for a both ends unequal overhang column vessel during rigging analysis?

Thanks in advance
kk

Hello kk

During the lift, the vessel is treated as a simply supported beam suspended between the tailing and lifting lugs. We used numeric integration to perform this analysis because the vessel could have different diameters, an assortment of cones. some nozzles and a skirt.

The programme is actually quite involved, because the vessel is sliced into small sections that have to be combined. However, if you were to build a vessel with a skirt and one cylinder having identical dimension, you could compute the weight multiplied by the snatch (impact) factor, and knowing the section modulus of the combined cylinder get the bending stress in the centre of the vessel at the lift. Do not attach any heads to make the analysis simpler. Otherwise we would need to give you maybe a thousand lined of source code.

I'd tried to work it out with simple beam theory (see attached)'Beam overhanging both supports - Unequal overhangs -UDL
It seem the moments and shear values i got is not tally with what i had in PVelite.
Any assumptions being made by PVelite?

Any feedbacks will be highly appreciated.

Thanks a lot.

Hello kk

Please send your calculation and the PV Elite file to me at techsupport@coade.com. I might not be able to reply this week, because the person in charge of tech support is not here, as we are officially on holiday, and I am only here to solve the immediate problems.
