I have a concern on an existing stub-in on a line I am analyzing. The stress is very high and the plant stated they do not want to cut on the pipe. It is an 8" on 20" (.25" thk with .09" C.A.). One of the guys at my company stated a split tee or full enciclement saddle could help. Using FEA i came up with SIF in and outplane and it passed stress using 75% of the overall thickness of the pipe and saddle combination. Has anyone ever heard of this or used it? Am I doing this correctly?
Thanks,
Price

I am not qualified to comment on the application of split tees and full encirclement tees. I hear they are quite stout.

I would double check that SIF estimate.

Is this a hot tap? If so, there will be additional load (strain) considerations caused by the resulting cold pull on your system.

This is not a hot tap. It would be on an existing stubin just to get more "meat" around that connection where a repad would not be enough. I have 5 inplane and 6.3 outplane for SIFs for the saddle. I think it was a poor design to begin with to have a .15" thick 20" pipe operating at a pretty high temperature and pressure. I would think this would get me into a tee scenario rather than a reinforcement pad.
