Dear Sir,

Recently I happened to come across a finding which I would like to share.
While computing thickness of Backing ring For Floating head type HX's, Software computes thickness of backing ring w.r.t to TEMA Clause.
The results is then displayed in a well tabulated form for HEAD, Floating Head & Backing ring components mentioning "Maximum+ Corrosion Allowance".

I happened to explore that Corrosion allowance is considered in Head as well as Floating head but the same is not considered in backing ring component.

Since backing ring is directly bolted to floating head & since bolt load is transferred to the same & subjected to shell side fluid as well, corrosion allowance shall be considered for backing ring.

Dear Tahir,

Pleae refer TEMA clause RCB 1.517 ( Eighth Edition), Corrosion allowance is not required for the floating head backing device.

Hope the above claification will help.

Hello SKY,

If we read carefully TEMA RCB 1.5 STANDARD CORROSION ALLOWANCE 1st para.

its specifies that The standard corrosion allowances used for the various heat exchangers part are as follows,
unless the conditions of the service make different allowance more suitable and such allowance is specified by purchaser.

Hence if the purchaser specifies, or there is service requirement the sameto provide corrosion allowance.
shall be considered.

The same can be mistaken & taken for granted as software specifies the thickness in its output in the form of "Maximum + corrosion allowance".

This is for avoiding inadverant mistake, which once can face.

Dear Mandeep,

There shall be an option provided in the Pvelite to consider corrosion allowance in the backing ring.

Regards.
