Hi

I am modelling toriconical bottom with large end 1900mm id and small end 0 with a drain nozzle of 50nb at the bottom. With this input ,half apex angle is calculated as 70 degrees and when i am attaching nozzle it is being shown as invalid cone geometry.Plese tell me whether ASME Sec VIII Div II allows to use a cone with half apex angle greater than 60 degrees and if it is not allowed, tell me how to model it.

Hello naganarayan

You cannot install a convential nozzle in the end of a cone in PV Elite. This is what you do instead:

1 First created a cylinder. Give that cylinder the dimensions of the nozzle.

2. The create a cone. The bottom of the cone should match the cylinder (which now represents your nozzle).

You cannot use the conventional method of installing a nozzle a method because it expects to compute the nozzle reinforcement which is meanignless for a nozzle at the end of a cone.

Sir
Thank you for your reply.
I have modelled as you said and done analysis. My conical bottom has half apex angle more than 60 degrees and to be designed for external pressure..ASME SEC VIII Div 2,Article D-3 has not given reinforcement calculations for this type of geometry. .But in PV Elite generated report ,it is giving reinforcement calculations and it is taking some "DELTA" value also in the calculation. Please Can any body tell Why the reinforcemnet calculations are given for this?. and How axial force acting on the large end of the cone is calculated?

It is giving some errors also like fl is greater than PRl/2.If it is more ,anybody can tell what is the problem.

Hi Naganarayan

It is best you send me your PV Elite file. Just send it to: techsupport@coade.com marked for my attention. Also give me a brief description of your problem. I need that because I receive many emails, and I can remember just so much.
