All,

Corrections to the B31.3 2004 Edition can be reviewed and downloaded from the ASME B31.3 web site.

Here's the link: B31.3 2004 Errata

I just opened the link to the errata with no problem.

This is a PDF so you must have Adobe's Acrobat Reader to open this file. Adobe Acrobat Reader is a free download from Adobe.

I was able to read it, 28 pages. Try Acrobat Reader 7.0 from

In the B 31.3 2004 errata page 14 clause 302.3.5 it is written:

'In considering longitudinal stress, the weld joint strength reduction factor, W, may be taken as 1.0 for longitudinal welds.'

My questions to our mentors is whether longitudinal stress is calculated for longitudinal welds and in seamless pipes, why will there be any longitudinal weld ?

In sustained stress comparison, will we consider stress allowable as Sh*W or Sh (with W=1) & for occasional stress 1.33*Sh ?

regards,

sam

W can be broken down into two categories - hoop checks for longitudinal welds and longitudinal checks for circumferential welds. So for the pressure check worry about long. welds and for long. stress checks (sustained) worry about circ. welds. Para. 302.3.5(e) excludes W in occasional stress checks (they are not long term loads).

If you are below creep temperatures, simply ignore W in CAESAR II. In creep temperatures, click seam welded to specify the long. weld W (seamless pipe can be ignored since long. W = 1)and identify circ. welds by adding nodes and identifying the butt weld SIF and associated circ. weld W.

You might try this alternative - ignore all circ. W's and simply do a review of sustained stresses. For example, if W=0.8, then you can use only 80% of the allowable sustained limit. (But that does nothing for Eqn. (1b) - the limit for expansion stress range - so I might suggest also using Appendix P. But now things are starting to get even more complicated.)

Be careful in the creep range.

erm.

dont shoot me but,
should'nt the units for wall thickness calcs be the same.?

According to the book, t is a factor of 1000 out.
this is caused by changing from PSI/Kpa to Kpi Mpa in the pressure/Stress units.

Check appendix J, or am i missing something ???

Superpiper - I brought up your issue about the units for t at the B31.3 meeting last month.

Check out Note (1) in Appendix J. "Note that the use of these units is not required by the Code. They represent sets of consistent units (except where otherwise stated) which may be used in computations, if stress values in ksi and MPa are multiplied by 1000 for use
in equations that also involve pressure in psi and kPa values."

It may not be the best place to say it and it may not be that clear but you have to hand it to those guys, it allows the units to stand as written in B31.3.
