Dear friends,

I have 2 years experience in designing pressure vessels.I have designed many Circular Pressure vessels. But this is the first time I am doing a Rectangular type.

Can anyone please answer for my doubt.
The details of the problem is,
Design of Rectangular tank
Size 1500 length x 800 width x1200ht mm with two different conditions
1. Internal pressure 1 kg/cm2
2. Absolute vacuum
Material: MS ; Medium: Air

To find: Thickness of the tank, Stiffener size
Corrugated type of tank is preferable or not.

I had gone through Appendix 13 in ASME Sec V111 Div 1 and Megysey book Rectangular tank under Hydrostatic pressure topic(pressure is not considered, thickness is calculated generally for the required size). But still I did not get the proper formula to find thickness for varying pressure.

Please help me.

Expecting your reply. Please reply as soon as possible. I need it urgently.

Thanks a lot.

With kind Regards

Hi Alamu,

The following reply is from Mr. Delaforce.

The Megyesy book on tank design is for open top tanks filled with water or some other liquid. It is not very helpful in you want to design a rectangular pressure vessel.

Our programme CodeCalc can design rectangular tanks, covering all the various designs in ASME Division 1, Appendix 13. It can analyze any stiffener ribs you have on the vessel.

You simply enter the dimensions of the vessel and stiffeners, and CodeCalc will perform the analysis with the click of the mouse. Where over stress is encountered, you can quickly make any adjustments to the design. The sizes you mentioned can be analyzed quite easily.

If you would like further information, you can email Ray Delaforce at techsupport@coade.com and he will give you any further information that will help you through this process.
