Hello All,

In the spring support if there is a horizontal movement along with the vertical downward movement then is the friction comes in to play? If yes then is it between clamp & pipe or somewhere else.

Kindly let me know your views on the same.

Regards,
RK

Do you mean a hanger or base support spring ?

Hanger .... the rod length should be sufficient to allow horizontal movement without undue resistance. Friction generally would be ignored in analysis.

Base type spring ... pipe will need a shoe attached and friction will be between the shoe and the spring load table. Usually teflon is specified for heavy loads.

Also you must realize that there is some small distance that the load table in a spring can will translate without friction, as the coil spring assumes a shape much like a double offset bend, on a much smaller scale. Sliding will begin once the OD of the coil spring meets the ID of the housing.

For large axial movements of piping on a spring can, a roller chair is a nice accessory, but of course it's useless for lateral movement. (Guides are nice!)
