In plane and out of plane lateral movements for expansion joints-
Has someone heard this term w.r.t. tied expansion joints ?
One of the venodr is asking for this info when we specified total lateral movement in our spec( which we got from CAESARII model of our system). The venodr came out with tis query .
Could some one help?

Sunil,
If your piping is in X direction, in plane lateral movement is DY and out of plane lateral movement is DZ.

Typically for expansion joints, the bending ( in plane and out of plane) as well as the lateral displacements( in plane and out of plane) along with the displacement are coverted into a 'TOTAL AXIAL DISPLACEMENT" and checked against the allowables for specified no. of cycles.

Hope this helps.

Regards

One small addition, '' along with the displacement" should be read as " along with the axial displacement"
