What does CAESAR word stand for?

I think it's Computer Aided Engineering, Stress Analysis and Review.

I'm not certain, but I think the 'II' came from the original Caesar code as written by Tony Paulin on another (HP3000 ??) system being converted by him to run on the (then) brand spanking new IBM PC with math co-processor. So there it is, Caesar II.

This is unofficial but it's the story I tell...

Tony was quite experienced with pipe stress software by the time he set out to introduce his program. All the existing packages had "Pipe" or "Flex" in their names (Triflex, Dynaflex, Pipeline, PipeSD, ADLPipe, etc.) and he wanted to try something else - CAESAR. Note there is no "II". The acromyn being Computer Aided Engineering Structural Analysis Routines. The long term goal was not to simply produce a pipe stress program but a finite element package for use by piping and pressure vessel engineers. But the pipe element was released first as that would generate revenue to continue development. CAESAR took off. (Later, Tony's partner, Rex Evans, wanted to stay with piping while Tony wanted to move on other FEA work. Tony sold his half of COADE to Rex and that funded Tony's new company, Paulin Research Group. In fact Tony's pursuing that path even now.)

Now about that "II". What I heard was that the lawyers from Caesars Palace sent Tony a letter stating that he could not use the name CAESAR for his program. He added the "II" to skirt the issue.

There was never a CAESAR I - a CAESAR Jr., yes, but that's another short story.

Talking of threats regarding the name Caesar .... What's this then ? I quote from Wikipaedia ..... "Caesar II is a computer game of the Caesar computer game series that takes place in Ancient Rome." The description ends with .... Introduced in 1995. Where are the Coade lawyers just when you need them ?

p.s. I remember Tony Paulin when he used to teach Ceasar courses, saying his main worry about the name was that somemone would write a program called Brutus.

Believe it or not I have a copy of "that" board game, which later moved to the PC. We couldn't see wasting the energy (or the money) getting lawyers to chase this and attempt to force a name change. We were using the name CAESAR II for over 10 years before the game was released.



There really has never been any confusion over this, except just once. Some years ago someone actually made it to this Forum and posted a question regarding how to increase his "grape production" to advance his wealth. (Unfortunately I deleted the post and banned him from the Forum, it was somewhat humorous.) I don't understand how he could get so deep in our site, see all these other posts, and still ask about grapes ?? This does bring a few adjectives about his intelligence to mind, but I'll refrain from posting them.

... and as to how the name is used, it is CAESAR II, all in caps, with the Roman numeral "II".
