hi there, some questions here.
long lines are always expected in the piperack, some because of the piping design/stress requirements, loops are made... stops are located in between this loop.

suppose i just have a straight line, no loops are required, stops must be placed in the center... can i delete this instead? is it required?

thanks!

Normally I would put a line stop in every long run of pipe to make sure it doesn't jump from its support due to heating and cooling of the line in combination with different friction forces in both situations.

Hi Zed,

Perhaps deleting the stop will not cause any problems in the real world.
I dont have much of an experience on the field.
But if I were to choose,I would always have the linestop in place to ensure the behaviour of the piping system.
Please note also that stops will help you take care of the occasional loads even if you dont need them for thermal reasons.

S, your 'perhaps' is misguided.

If you want to be sure that a pipe remiains where it was installed for the life of the plant, always include a linestop and suitable guides in long pipe runs.

Remember that if bay lengths are equal, a stress calc will show little or no force on a central line stop. This is often not the real case and most certainly not during start-up of a hot line.

If u put line stop with 4 or 6 bend loops in the hot (hp,mp steam etc.) rack dat will fully ensure your piping would be safe in all respect (STRESS,FORCE NOZZLE LOADS).6 bend bit a costly generally 4 bends are used.

Rule of thumb is good but it should not be a substitute to engineering science. The stress engineer ( in my humble opinion)should understand the reason why loops are required. Axially a member is much stiffer than it is flexurally ( axial stiffness= AE/L and Flexural stiffness = 12EI/L^3). Starting from here, one should understand why loops are required.

Regards
