In many posts here, I have seen people mention the "Speilvogel" book. I hope this is "Stress Calculations Simplified" by S.W.Spielvogel.

May I please ask the members where can I buy/ get this particular book (may be a pdf copy, for which I am ready to afford a reasonable amount), as it seems to be out of print (may be after 1955). I could not get it from any popular online bookstores (amazon, etc.) I am in India in its Capital Delhi.

John Breen has already pointed out that this book was published privately hence the dreadful typeface and lack of availability, and its contents are mostly copied elsewhere, such as Tube Turns. It's a venerable text but not a good learning document. I have a .pdf file of it which I could send, but I'm not so sure about email addresses on this forum.

There were really very few copies printed and these were printed by Speilvogel. It will be hard to find a complete copy today. The book is NOT the best text to learn piping stress analysis, especially how it is done today, but it has a few really useful presentations. One excellent topic is the presentation on allowable stress range and how and why it is calculated the way it is. There is a presentation on "approximate calculations" but today we have computers. The binding is by a plastic spine (brittle with age) and my copy fell apart when I had it copied to distribute to the B31 MDC Committee. I suspect that most of the copies that were originally made have disintegrated by now. There would be no point in reprinting this book (no market) but it was certainly of historic value.

It is important for those who will really read the book to note that there is something in the development of the equation for B31 allowable stress RANGE that has been CHANGED BY THE B31 COMMITTEE since the book was originally printed. The explanation on page 5 now is slightly out-of-step with the B31 Code. As an exercise, you should find the change and explain it here on this thread .

Thank you for making that available. I am not so astute - actually I was "tipped off" by an email from another person. I thought it was important that this information get to this thread. Speilvogel's work is effectively in the public domain as the author/publisher is gone and the only profit to be made now goes to to the used booksellers who I suspect do not send a royalty to the Speilvogel "estate".

Back in 1955 there was only one ASME B31 Code - B31.1. The allowable stress for materials (at temperatures less than creep temperature) was based upon the lesser of 1/4 tensile strength or 5/8 yield strength. Later it became the lesser of 1/4 tensile strength or 2/3 yield strength. B31.3 became the lesser of 1/3 tensile strength or 2/3 yield strength.

If you have gmail you should also have google docs. You can upload it there in PDF format (I do not recommend converting scanned PDFs to google docs) and then share it.

To share, open the file, then in the top left hand corner is a Share button. Select "Get Link to Share"

Then click the check box near "Allow anyone with the link to view (no sign-in required)"

Copy and paste link as desired.

My company will not allow uploading of files anymore. Since around 8000 downloaded the copy I put on 4shared, someone ought to be able to upload another copy.

Do remember that although it's excellent historical stuff, Spielvogel is really of quite limited use these days.

Since Mr. Peng only completed his latest book 'Pipe Stress Engineering' a couple of years ago and it sells in excess of $100, he might be a bit miffed if it were available to freely download.

There is that tricky little thing called copyright, which can result in expensive legal action.

(Free) electronic distribution of books currently being published and available for sale is a violation of Copyright Laws - otherwise known as "theft". This is different from distributing an out-of-print copy of something 40 years old (although I'm sure many lawyers would disagree with me on this).
