I should remember this from last week, sorry guys. Also I'm not a piping guy (vibration) For the petrochemical industry, when is a stress analysis required and what standard deals with this? Thanks.

First of all, prior to starting to build a piping model you have to know what you wish to achieve in any analysis.
1) Determining the stresses in the system and comparing with the range allowed by the Piping Code
2) effect of piping loads on the rotating equipment nozzle
3) effect of piping loads on the heat exchanger, pressure vessel or tank nozzle?
4) the piping loads on the structural supports such as V-stop and anchors
5) movements of the piping system due to thermal growth or contraction
6) effects of wind loads, Wave Loads, erathquake and other occassional load cases on the piping system and/or attached equipment
7) effects of soil resistance to movement for underground or buried piping system and/or any attached equipment
8) effects of changes in temperature, pressure and weight on flanged couplings and to determine if there is a tendency for the connections to leak?

Dear Blue,

Please read Sam Kannappan book. I have the old edition. It is addressed in chapter Ten in section "Piping System to be Analyzed. There are 15 categories Stress analysis will normally to be performed. I"ve also ever read such related categories in Norsok Standard.

This what I mean:
http://www.standard.no/pronorm-3/data/f/0/01/36/0_10704_0/L-CR-002r1.pdf

...and go to to:
6.2 Selection criteria for lines subject to comprehensive stress analysis

Sam Kannappans book has recently been repressed and is still available through amazon.com:

PS. I don't know if it's allowed to add an amazon link in this forum. If not, my apologies.
