Hello,

I'm new to stress analysis and need some advice. The task given to me is to analyse a system that is fabricated with 12 ga 304L SS. One section has about 100 feet of 56" dia duct. Operating temps are around 350 F, and pressures range from minus 0.2 PSIG to 4 PSIG. My question is, with a D/t ratio of about 550 am I wasting my time running an analysis on this system?

thanks,

Calling such an effort "a waste of time" is a bit harsh.

You are correct to be skeptical but there may be some value. While the programs 3D beam bending approach may not uncover problems with local shell distortion or buckling (a major concern here), it will give you a pretty good idea of deadweight distribution and thermal growth. And maybe through the simple process of input generation you will learn something more about this particular layout that will assist your review.

Certainly do not consider your job done simply because CAESAR II does not show any red ink in the output.
