Section of a 3D model

I need some advice and help for sections of a 3D model. I have a building with pipes, tanks, beams, and some elements that are drawn as blocks. When I draw section with AutoCad command solid view - solid draw, elements that are blocks are not visible. How can I draw section in Cadworx or Autocad with all my objects visible? Does Cadworx has a command for sections?
Thank you, g

What Version of ACAD are you using?
I havn't worked much with the solview command, but I normally generate section by using the 3d orbit command.
I select the end view or wherever I am looking from and then adjust the clipping planes in 3d orbit mode.
Alternatively you could use the autocad section command. Although that will only give you a 2D drawing of the section plane.

Thanks it's working. Now my problem are solids that are cut (walls,...). It would be great if there would be a hatch on this cut faces.

I assume you are using Cadworx Plant?
What you could do once you have your desired section in your viewport, you can use the 2DREP command.
This will trace whatever you have in your viewport onto paperspace and switch off the viewport. You then have a traditional 2d section that you can edit using normal ACAD commands such as trim and erase etc. You can then hatch your walls. If ever your model updates, you can then erase the 2d view, reactivate the viewport and then repeat the process.

I'm using AutoCAD 2006!
I have a problem with "adjust the clipping planes" command. Is it possible to slice a model in 2D view and than rotate this sliced model into 3D view without rotating the planes.
So I need just one detail from my model (in 3D view), for instance one pump with few pipes and I don't like my pipes cut sideways.
I hope that my question is understandable.

As far as I am aware....no.
You basically have to adjust your view to the required 2D representation, plan view, end view or whatever.
Then adjust your clipping planes.
You other option is to copy your complete model, move some of the components to a temporary layer and switch off the layer. Or erase what you don't require.
That's the whole purpose of model space, to model what is required in your layout views.

Does Cadworx has a command for sections?
This is your initial Question right?
Yes! Cadworx Point and Shoot UCS has it. use the clip option. you will get a very precise clipping by numerical input for both front and back clipping distance. FORGET ABOUT AUTOCAD CLIPPING COMMAND. It is better to use Cadworx clipping, through Point and shoot UCS or "viewclip" in the command prompt.

Hello:)
Please, try View Box command. Plant->Utility->View->Box, and View->Edit
I think it's a pretty good tool.

As Viloga says, you have to use the CadWorx command Viewbox in model space, (it's not very difficult) and then you go to paper space and create a window, then you go to "named views" and select the view you had create with "viewbox", select the window and adjust the scale ( i use 1:1). Then you can use the "2DREPRESENTATION" and you have the section. You can place the view in modelspace with copy/paste or with "espress tools>layout>change space"
regards

View box is cool but, How about creating section (elevation view) looking in two direction like North East, South East, etc....?

If you are using CADWorx Plant, you can use the AutoCAD 3dclip command to create your section in your paperspace viewport. Or you can use the box command and create different views on the box (from modelspace). After that just 2drep.

yes, right.. but view box is limited to TOP, BOTTOM, LEFT, RIGHT, FRONT and BACK VIEW only. how about doin a section for an assembly that is lying Diagonaly from NORTH WEST to SOUTH EAST. and at the same time you will need to do a precise clipping. VIEW BOX cannot do that.

It should if you change your UCS. If box doesn't work, then use clip after you align your UCS to the centreline.

Yes, every thing is possible, I think you change your UCS and try: ViewClip, BOX and even 2DREP CADWorx Commands. This way you can have altern/reference/auxiliary UCS not just World UCS. It is still AutoCAD.

Yes! I know. Since our Topic is about doing Section. I just want to put some highlight on using POINT and SHOOT UCS. Viewbox is only one of the options and it is limited for creating views.
POINT and SHOOT UCS + ViewClip are the basic and it can create every view that you can imagine. Remember guys CADWorx is UCS dependent from modeling to viewing.

Also with Auto 2007 the "3D Dashboard" has a nice section cut routine. It will also hatch the areas that are cut and create the 2d dwg in one step. You can save your section lines so you can recreate the same view later.

Re. Clipping
AutoCAD 2007 handles this very well; the command is on the DASHBOARD and is called Section Plane. It’s very easy to use, and it hatches section automatically.

Go to TOOLS-PALLETTES-DASHBOARD and open the pallette window. Up near the top right hand corner is a button called section plane. Then working from a plan view you can place your section line. If you click on it once to display the grips you will notice it's grips look different. That's because they are what I would call smart grips, they control section boundries, volume, and which direction you wish to cut. Once your ok with you section line simply right click the line and go to generate 2d/3d section. Inside that dialog box there are a wealth of options, ranging from layers, linetypes, hatchpatterns, obscured line setting etc. You can also insert the section into the current dwg as a block or send the section to a certain file location (wblock). Just to some tweaking I'm sure there many options I havn't discovered myself.

Is there a way to use multiple viewboxes on a model and use those created views with viewports on drawing tabs?
I seem to be having a problem with it turning off the views in other drawing tabs.

Don't forget about XCLIP. UCS Clip, 3D Clip, and View Box all do about the same thing. I personally have my 3D Models xref'd to a new drawing, and I use a mixture of View Box(or mulitple view boxes) and XCLIP in the viewports to create my sections, and other details.

Thanks Matt. The Control Panels pull-out doesn't actually 'pull-out'. Hmm.... Maybe I'll have to consult our CAD guy.

Where would we find this command in 2009? No more dashboard, only ribbon and all my tabs and panels are loaded Can't seem to find anything.
Perhaps you can give the commandline hotkey?

Perhaps you can give the commandline hotkey? The command is SECTIONPLANE, available from the menu under Draw->Modeling->SectionPlane (use MENUBAR = 1) to display menu old style, or look under the "A" in the top left if you're using the new style. I didn't see it on a ribbon tab.

When we create drawings with various cut-outs, we use multiple viewports. It is a cumbersom process, but we get it to work.
I have tried the section planes and found that lines are not affected, just solids. I also found out, CWX 2008 and down, that 2drep does not work with the planes. I haven't tried it in 2009.
