I presume you mean "cold load design" versus "hot load design" ?

The first thing to realize about a spring is that it can only balance the system in one position. As soon as the system moves away from this balanced position (i.e. a different load case), the spring is no longer balanced with the load (the weight of the associated piping) it is supposed to carry.

So, what position do you want to balance in:
- The operating (hot) condition where you hope to find your system all the time.
- Some average (hot) operating condition if you have mulitple OPE scenarios (which you can setup on the "Hanger Run Control Dialog").
- Or the (cold) condtion when the system is off-line?
