Hi!
I have a pipe material listed in my pipe spec, which is not in the caesar database. The material name is A312 S31254. In which standard should I search in order to find material properties like thermal exp coefficient? I'm using B31.3 piping code.
Regards
Kris

Hi kris,

My suggestion is, you have to ask your vedor for the data if not found in any code.. It will be easier to ask the data.. grin
And caesarII has all material data in B31.3 as expected..

Regards!

CAESAR II does not have "all" of the materials from B31.3, only the ones we thought were the most commonly used. If you frequently use a material not in the database, use the "\Tools\Material Database Editor" to add the material. That's what this utility is for.

When I have this type of case I look first to the design code, then to ASME II and if not found to Internet. Last item sounds bad but normally I am able to find steel mill who is supplying the material and they normally have published data for their special materials. Other good places are well known suppliers like www.specialmetals.com. Thermal expansion depends on chemical composition. Small error in values will not "kill" your calculations. Using values for similar material will give you sufficiently accurate result.

This specific steel seems to be 19/18 (Cr/Ni) with 6% Mo. Molybdenium should lower the thermal expansion coefficient so if you would use values for lower Mo steel you would be concervative.

kris,

were you able to find relevant information for the A312 S31254 material. I found a couple references that give general properties but I could not find any references in B31.3.

I was able to get information from a colleague regarding this material. I posted the information on the following forum

Try this:

Note that I have no business or financial relationaship with Outo Kumpu, they're just the supplier that seemed to me to ahve the most useful technical bulletin available for download.
