What is wind profile area? What is the formula tank software is using for this area?

The "wind profile area" is the projected area of the tank. For the tank shell this is simply the diameter * shell height. The projected area of the roof varies, based on the type of roof. (For a cone roof the area would be 1/2 * diameter * roof height. I'm not near the source code right now, and I don't remember the equations for the dome and umbrella roof areas.)

I'm designing a fuel storage tank. The diameter is 40' and the height is 32'. The slope of the rafter supported roof is 1:12. Tank software generates a wind profile area of 1313.3 sq.ft. Using your given formula doesn't gives result in this value. Can you clarify?

Hi Rob,
The area of 1313.3 is correct.
please note for wind load considerations, projected area can be increased by external attachments like insulations,L&P,external stiffeners etc.

Roof Height = 20/12 = 1.667 ft
Projected Roof Area = 1/2 * Diameter * Height = 1/2 * 40 * 1.667 = 33.33 sqft
Tank Area = Diameter * tank height = 40 * 32 = 1280

Total Area = 1280 + 33.33 = 1313.3 sq ft
