Dear all!

I have a question regarding cold spring modelization. According to B31.1 section 119.10 "reactions" when calculating reactions of a system with cold spring only 2/3 of such cold spring must be considerated when evaluating reactions(I have read that this is due to the difficulty of performing a good cold spring on site). So, if I have a system where the design cold spring is going to be 100 mm ,for example, which pipe cut must I enter in CAESAR? 100 mm or 2/3 of 100 mm, that is to say, 66,6 mm? Does CAESAR "internally" consider such ratio of 2/3 or must the user consider it when entering the input data?

Thanks a lot for any help.

You (the analyst) must account for any cold spring factors. Therefore in the case discussed above, you would enter 66.67mm as the cold spring length.

While on the subject of cold spring, I'd like to discuss the "cut short" element. I am modeling an existing system that has cold spring. Or shall I say, I assume it has cold spring. The ISOs have NOM. and FAB. dimensions which I take as meaning Nominal and Fabrication. The difference between the two is between 1/2" and 4", with the FAB. dimension always the shorter of the two. So I model this system and where I come across NOM. and FAB. dimensions, I put in a "cut short" element. During the Piping Error Checker, I get "WARNING 121E - HOT ALLOWABLE 1...is not specified, while the corresponding Temperature is. Shx is needed for Allowable calculations." Is this telling me I need to manually input the allowables for each cut-short element?

Actually, we need to change the error checker to avoid this sort of thing for cold spring elements. You shouldn't have to do anything here.

(Can you e-mail me the ._A file so I can test the modification?)

I sure can. But the file is a monster. Good luck.
