Hello fellow piping designers,

I would like to recommend to the group that you look into getting a copy of a recently issued WRC document:

Title: Guidelines for the Design and Installation of Pump Piping Systems.
V. A. Carucci and J. A. Payne
Welding Research Council Bulletin 449

I have had a copy of the draft of this document for about 8 years and I have been bugging the WRC to issue it - well it finally has been issued. You may recognize the names of the authors - well respected engineers with many years of experience. The title is very descriptive of the contents - this is 48 pages of common sense guidelines to designing piping so that the pumps will survive. This is a must read and a great reference for your technical library.

Best regards, John

An excellent suggestion. Contact information for the Welding Research Council is:

Welding Research Council, Inc.
3 Park Avenue (27th Floor)
New York, NY 10016-5902
212-705-7986

Other WRC Bulletins that should be in your library include:

<td width="15%" bgcolor="ffffee">WRC-297</td><td>Local Stresses In Spherical and Cylindrical Shells due to External Loadings - Supplement to WRC Bulletin 107</td></tr><tr><td width="15%" bgcolor="ffffee">WRC-329</td><td>Accuracy of Stress Intensification Factors for Branch Connections</td></tr><tr><td width="15%" bgcolor="ffffee">WRC-368</td><td>Stresses in Intersecting Cylinders Subjected to Pressure</td></tr><tr><td width="15%" bgcolor="ffffee">WRC-429</td><td>3D Stress Criteria Guidelines for Applications</td></tr></table>

Let me also add to the WRC Bulletin list some recent work by E.C. Rodabaugh and E.A. Wais:

WRC Bulletin 448 (January, 2000)
Title - Evaluation of Welded Attachments on Pipe and Elbows

This bulletin provides 2 reports from Everett and Ed which apply to the Section III Piping Code. However you can look further and taken together with the WRC Bulletins listed by Rich above this new work can provide some additional insight into the sometimes enigmatic topic of welding appurtenances onto pipes (or vessels). Also, this is a good look at how SIF are developed for configurations other than those shown in B31 Appendix "D".

I am adding this web address today (on 21VIII00) for those of you who would like more information on WRC bulletins. There is availability and pricing data at this address:
