CODE B31.9 CODE COMPARISON TO B31.1

Without getting into the technical details (unless you really want me to), the short answer is that B31.9 is less rigorous. Commercial office buildings do not have the high temperatures and pressures that power plants have and it is safe to relax the rigor.

If I can offer an analogy, B31.9 is to B31.1 as Category "D" (in B31.3) is to B31.3 normal service.

I should point out that B31.9 is not accepted by some local jurisdictions. You should check with the jurisdiction that you are designing for to be sure you may use B31.9
