In one of the Aluminium refinery in South America , we have 10" Header with two 10" branches converges at same point on Header with incuded angle of 60° between the branches i.e cut out material from header would be equal to two braches. How can we arrive at SIF for this typo connection.B31.3 is silent on this.
Though CODETI gives the values for angled branch connection but how can we simmulate above connection in CAESAR II ?
Anybody having experience for this type of connection ???

Regards

The close way to get to the real case is to code the branches 0.1" apart and define SIF at each intersection. If you model as branches intesecting at the same point, caesar does not consider SIF as four pipes are framing into intersection. its the case any time with fou pipe intersection caesar ignores SIF, look into the warning and errors report generated bu the caesar-II

hope this helps!!!!

Hello Kanwal,

Perhaps the better question is "how is this abomination reinforced... and to what rules"?

Don't bother with SIF's. Nothing in B31 can apply to this nightmare as it is simply very, very bad design. If you have any chance to demo this "branch connection" and to replace it with a correct design, do it.

I wonder what methodology the "designer" used to validate this construction and also what Code this is supposed to comply with. I suppose someone should refer you to Pipe Fabricating Institute Standard ES-2 for branch spacing

Good luck, John
