In the flange analysis stress check per ASME sec VIII Div 1, CAESAR II output shows following stresses

1.Longitudinal Hub
2.Radial Flange
3.Tangential Flange
4. Max. Avg.
5. Bolting

Where as ASME sec VIII Div 1 shows stress calculation for above first three stresses only.
Please explain what is purpose and significance of calculating Max. Avg. stress and Bolting Stress?

Max. average stress is also a requirement of the mandatory appendix 2 of ASME SEC viii DIV.1.

Regarding the rationale of computing and checking the bolt stress,I strongly recommend that you go through Appendix S of the same code.You will find an elaborate discussion which will answer all your questions.

All of the flange stress computations are defined in ASME Section VIII, Division 1, Appendix 2.

The ASME code requires that the average stress be checkedin 2-8(a)(4) of ASME Sec VIII Div 1.

The bolt stress check is also required, because there should be enough bolt area to withstand the load on the bolts. The ASME code has the check for the bolt areas, so the bolt stress check is implicitly performed.
