Hey y'all,
These are all good thoughts and I am glad my posting evoked considered responses.
Hi Ken. Yes, tension loading will eliminate buckling (like the spokes on a bicycle wheel). I am looking at some NPS 14 pipe right now that may see temperatures as low as -260 degrees F (an auto-refrigeration event). One end is attached to a knock-out drum and one end is attached to an NPS 30 flare header that will see 200 degrees F.
Richard, I am looking for my Grinnell book now. I am interested to see what all was considered (keep in mind that about that time Helmut Theilsch was the Chief Engineer at Grinnell and he was one of the greats).
I guess any time I see loadings that high I immediately wonder. Will the pipe connection accommodate the load, will the structure that the appurtenance is connected to accommodate the load? I think that was Ed's thought too - sometimes designers will install "load rated" support hardware and not fully consider all the other issues involved.
Herr Luf, I think the Belgiens make the best wheat beer!
Regards, John.
