In the interesting time of future, we have to deal with tough problems having no easy technological solutions. To prevent global warming, we may have to slow down, reduce unnecessary consumptions, but,still we shall find happiness in success of the cutting-age efforts of ASME , NASA and so many excellent oranizations painstakingly built!

Ah - but closer inspection reveals the spring is there to compensate for any changes in atmospheric pressure affecting the skyhooks

There is NO evidence that would support the idea that Luf and Breen were ever young. In his absence, the staff cleaned off Luf's desk and found original drawings of Noah's arc - and yes, the piping was made of wood.

Thanks! I keep suggesting we support pipe with helium balloons when I'm told "there's no steel there"... now I have a picture to show how it's done...

I believe your support is over designed. The baloons already act as a constant effort support so the spring is redundant.

This was a fire rated support and the springs are the stop mechanism if the baloons POP.....

The spring is an extra bit of safety factor in case the balloons "top out" on the deck above.

I'm sure there are more than a few stress guys (just in Houston) who should be awarded this image on a plaque.

lateral load and all thread rod.... (similiar to a U-bolt) do not mix well.....


But put a muffler clamp chair under the pipe and when the line drifts sideways it rises putting the rods into tension and you have a much stronger affair.

"Gentlemen, Statement of the problem:

The large diameter duct system is designed to use waste heat (1200 degrees C) by routing it through a turbo expander which turns an electric generator. Obviously the turbo expander is strain sensitive and cannot accomodate much loading at high temperatures. The inlet duct to the turbo expander is stainless steel - 1670 mm OD with 30 mm wall thickness horizontal run with large isolation valves (very rigid duct and the system relies upon expansion joints (hinges and gimbals)for flexibility). The duct entering the turbo expander inlet has two of the very heavy isolation valves nearby and must be supported but it cannot be supported on a roller from below because the radial growth of the duct would cause too high a moment on the expander. So, the heavy duct must be supported at its centerline while also accomodating the axial thermal growth. The duct must be allowed to move axially BUT it cannot change elevation as it moves with expansion - it cannot use rod hangers attached to trunnions at the centerline because it would move up as it expands horizontally.

The solution, the duct is supported at the centerline by a precision cam. The cam pivots on a shaft supported by pillow block bearings. As the duct moves horizontally, it moves the cam. The cam is designed such that the distance from the centerline of the pivot shaft to the moving support point increases exactly enough to keep the centerline of the duct at the same elevation as the duct moves with horizontal expansion. Elegant!

Watch those Rev Clouds...

I did work for a company when drawings were still made on drawing board. So to save time and ink big drawing manual was developed. According to the manual symmetrical full circle item was drawn only as 1/4 with centre lines. Big saving and everybody was happy until subcontractors started to supply 1/4 rings. Drawing manuals were destroyed.

Design done by a Senior Stress Engineer...and Piping supporting the steel support.

I have always said that the pipe holds up the buildings and the racks....

I am not sure if it is the pipe support or the steel structure that is not exactly on its designed place.

The second picture has a steel support beam which is not holding much weight anymore.

Ordinarily I would say the pipe moved the shoe off the support and then dropped down afterwards but looking closely it looks as though the clips on the steel were intended to cradle the insulation or pipe o.d.!
