Analysis for openings in vessels - 06/24/11 10:34 PM

Dear All,
I am not a static equipment engineer (S E E). I have a question to all S E Es on this forum. The ASME pressure vessel code calculations are only to decide if the requirement of reinforcement is there or not. So:

1) If integrally reinforced branch outlets OR LWN flanges are used for nozzles, is there a need to do the calculations for the openings?

2) Do we have to do any other calculation for opening apart from the area reinforcement requirement calcs?

Dear Shahid
Your query is not clear to us. however, pl. note following.

1.ASME SEC VIII Div-1 has given exception of reinforcement for Nozzle finished opening less than 2 inch for shell Thk great then 10 mm & 3 inch for shell THK less than 10 mm. However, in ASME SEC VIII Div-2 has not any exception, every opening to be calculated for adequacy of reinforcement.

2. ASME SEC VIII Div-1 has given reinforcement calculation based on the Area replacement method. However, ASME SEC VIII Div-2 has given Reinforcement Calculation based of pressure compensation method.
