Vapor/Distribution Belt (EN-13445)

Vapor/Distribution Belt (EN-13445) - 04/24/16 02:49 PM

Hello. In my vertical heat exchanger, I need to model a vapor-distribution belt (similar to type 1 of ASME Div.1). The problem is that my customer needs the calculation report according to EN-13445, but when I switch to design code EN, the icon "Jacket or Vapor/Distribution Belt" is inactive in the Details panel. Is there a workaround? Thanks a lot.
Regards,
Alberto

Hello ALB69

Yes, that is true. I shall speak to development to see if we can rectify the problem.

In the meanwhile I'm integrating the design report by means of hand calcs, e.g. per EN 13445-3 Paragraph 10.7.3 "Unpierced Annular Plates". Regards.

Hello Alberto

That analysis is not in the EN code. I had a chat to development, and they told me that was the reason it is not included in PV Elite. As the jacket is a vapour belt, there is no external pressure exerted on the shell, so that is not a problem. The closure bars at either end of the jacket can be calculation using ASME. This is a simple calculation, easy to do by hand, and the shell of the jacket can be calculated as for any cylinder under pressure using EN. Does that help you?

Dear Ray,
as to calculation for pressure loads, I agree with your suggestion. As to calculation for seismic, wind, forces on lugs, etc., I will replace the belt and its nozzles with one or more weight details (concentrated mass) in the precise position of their centroids (given from CAD).
Thanks,
Alberto
