PVElite2015 - JIS materials - 03/20/15 04:18 AM

Dear all,
in last PVE2015 Japanese materials have been included, but we faced the following problem with G3101 SS400.

When using G3101 SS400 as a plate e.g. for saddles design under “perform saddles check” the selected material gives:
1) allowable = 100MPa for all temperatures (seems not reasonable)
2) Min tensile strength = 400 MPa
3) Min Yield strength = 205 MPa (seems not correct)

But in the saddles dialog the yield and allowable are:

1) allowable = 99.9 MPa (seems not reasonable)
2) Yield strength = 245.46 MPa

In the calculation report the allowables used are:

1) Allowable (tension) stress = 0.6*Yield = 147.28 MPa
2) Allowable (bending) stress = 2/3*Yield = 163.64 MPa

In addition, G3101 SS400 seems not to be in the material database under “edit/add materials”

Is this a bug?

Thank you

Federico Freschi

Dear Federico,

In version 2015 we did indeed add a new database of Japanese materials. In the database there are essentially 2 sets of materials, 1 with a factor on tensile allowables of 4 and 1 with a tensile factor of 3.5. Unfortunately it is difficult to distinguish them apart. And there was another problem with the original version of PV Elite 2015 and that was there was an allowable stress interpolation problem when using the ASME metric database. This was a serious problem and as a result we issued a hot fix back in January that solved that solved the interpolation calculation.

To completely sort out the interpolation issue we had to temporarily remove the use of the Japanese materials. But don't worry they will be back and we have separated them into 2 separate databases, 1 with the tensile factor of 4 and 1 with the factor of 3.5. You will be easily able to choose between the 2 databases.

My very, very strong advice is for you (and everyone else) to immediately apply PV Elite 2015 SP1 on your machine. Then you should user define all of the Japanese materials that you will need for this project by using the material database editor.

My sincere apologies for the inconvenience.
